Designed to meet the diverse needs of a growing population, the newly constructed Monroe Senior Center provides a much needed outlet for social, recreational, cultural, educational, physical fitness, and economic programs for its senior citizens. Prior to its opening, activities for this elderly group were held in cramped quarters at two area churches or at a local high school.
The spacious 7,000 square foot single-story facility cost $1.9 million to complete. A major attribute of the center is its large community room that accommodates seating for 150 members. This space features a vaulted ceiling with tongue and groove wood planks, exposed wood trusses, and a fully glazed gable end wall affording spectacular views of neighboring Wolfe Park. Additionally, the senior center boasts a fully-equipped kitchen, computer room, activities room, library with fireplace and built-in shelving, health-screening center, and administrative offices.
The exterior of the center is clad in red cedar clapboard and features a sheltered entry with a trellis portico, and arcades surrounding three-quarters of the building’s perimeter to create covered walkways. The intersecting gable roofs are tiled with asphalt shingles.
In addition to fulfilling the programmatic requirements of the Senior Center, the new facility also serves the greater community of Monroe as an emergency shelter.
